An Interview With Steven Sanchez Print E-mail
    14 Mar 2004

Hal: Hey everybody! Look who we’ve got for ya! STEVEN SANCHEZ!!

Bubs: WHOA… TIMEOUT! Who is that lovely woman hugging my head?

Steven: That, Bubs, is Aria. She's from a book I'm doing now called Ro:Bots.

    Bubs: She’s pretty sweet.

    Steven: Yeah she is.

Bubs: Hey… what’s all this formal Steven stuff? We call him San! Right, San?

    San: That’s right.

Hal: So, San tell us about yourself?

San: Well, my full name is Steven Sanchez, and I'm from Florida. My current gig is working on my creator-owned book that I would like to start submitting to some publishers, to see if it's worthy of getting printed. I had a small taste of the comic book industry back a few years ago doing a small back up story in Dan Fraga's The Gear Station issue #3, then was asked to do the Wizard 1/2 issue of the same title. Since then, however, the book had been canceled and I've been selling my pieces on Ebay. It's a small living but it pays the bills. Now I'm working on Ro:Bots to start getting back into the game a bit and just enjoy the whole trip that comics provide, like conventions, e-mails, letters and fan pictures. Those, for me, are the true perks as an illustrator. Making sure folks like what I put out there.

Hal: Well we do… don’t we, Bubs?

Bubs: We sure do! Anyone that puts a hot chick around me… I love!!

Hal: So what were you doing at MegaCon?

San: Well that was my first show with Pat Carlucci from Hotinks. We've associated ourselves together to become a much greater force. He, along with Carlos Montanez, lend their inking techniques to have a quicker turn around on my pages.

Hal: So 2 inkers on one book?

San: Yeah, a dream come true for me. But only time, and the fan response, will tell how well it goes.

Hal: Well that’s why we here, San. To help you get the word out!

Bubs: It wouldn’t be the first time we helped you out would it, San.

San: Oh hell yeah! You just don't know the hell I went through trying to get off planet Teycu! It all started when our famed space explorers, Bubs and Hal, landed for directions to Earth and found me running like a mad-man away from the deadly RuRu's of Teycu. I ran so fast that I ended up stumbling over Hal and falling flat on my back. Bubs, seeming shocked at seeing a Human on planet Teycu, started asking me for directions. I told them we had better get out of there and quick! So I grabbed both of them and threw them in their ship. They were a bit ticked off to have been around that way, but when the RuRu's jumped on the window of the cockpit, with huge fangs salivating, they popped the clutch and bolted back into space! And that my friends is how they rescued me from the planet Teycu.

Hal: This man is the coolest!!

    San: Aww… Thanks Hal.

Hal: Sure buddy! So San… tell us more about Onixan.

    Bubs: Yes.

San: Onixan productions is a start up studio that's working on its first creator-owned book called Ro:Bots.

    Hal: Ro:Bots? AWESOME!!

Bubs: Sweet! What are the Ro:Bots?

San: It's a small story arc about 4 robots that were found a long time ago, and how a whole new technological world was formed around them.

Hal: Awesome!! Who are some of the Characters?

San: Well, the main character is Aria.

    Bubs: Mmmm... Aria...

    San: Yeah.

    Hal: GRRRRRuff!

San: I know what you're thinking… and yes, it is.

Bubs: Yeah? You mean she’s named after our good friend, and total babe, Aria Giovanni?

San: That's how I got the name.

    Bubs: SWEEEEEET!!

Hal: She’s such a nice gal.

San: I know. I saw both of the interviews in the Interviews section.

Hal: So Aria is a Ro:bot?

    San: Yup.

Hal: Does she have any cool, super-human powers?

San: Yeah, better than super-human, actually. Since they're robots, they have all sorts of cool changeable gadgets.

Hal: Right on! Now, Bubs, I know what your thinking.

Bubs: What? I was thinking of innocent stuff.

    Hal: Sure you were.

Bubs: I was! I was thinking of changeable brains... or arms... or big... giant...

    Hal: Bubs wait!!

    Bubs: Hearts.

    Hal: Oh.

    Bubs: And boobies.

    Hal: I knew it.

San: You guys are making me laugh! I’m not so sure about the changeable boobs, though.

Bubs: Oh well. So tell us about some of the other guys in Ro:Bots. Or are they all girls?

    San: All girls.

    Bubs: MY DREAM COME TRUE!!!

    Hal: No way!! WOOOWEEE!!!

San: We do have some guys, and special love interests, just to make the story more rounded.

Bubs: Eh... I guess guys are allowed... to help change tires... and open jars… and get things off of the top shelf.

San: Well the girls can handle themselves. Aria actually shoots her "fists" at other Bot-Chicks.

Bubs: Ooooh! Shooting fists! That sounds bad-ass!

Hal: So San, tell us more about Hotlinks.com

    San: Actually, Hal that's Hotinks.com. Hotlinks.com is a sausage site, I believe.

Hal: Ha! Sorry bout that. So tell us about HotINKS.

San: No prob! Hotinks is run by Pat Carlucci. He was the illustrator drawing behind me at Mega-Con.

    Bubs: Oh, right.

San: It’s pretty much just a band of illustrator's joining one site to promote their illustrative works.

Hal: And how long have you been a part of Hotinks?

    San: About a year now.

    Hal: Fantastic!

    San: Don't you mean, SANtastic?

    Bubs: Ooooh…. A lyrical genius!

San: Yeah but I can't rap for crap.

    Bubs: Nice.

    Hal: So you own Onixan?

San: Yuppers. I do a lot of the work there. For example… I script, pencil ink color and letter. Plus I do graphics and design.

Hal: And you get to draw hotties all day long.

Bubs: Sweet! So San, where are you based out of?

    San: Florida.

Bubs: Wow! That's where we landed!

Hal: You mean crash. Right, Bubs?

Bubs: I dunno what crash you’re talking about, ‘cuz I nailed our landing. Right, San?

    San: Oh yeah.

    Bubs: See.

Hal: Now you’re turning San on me?!

San: Then again… Hal was still a little dazed from me throwing him into the ship.

    Bubs: Oh... I see. Dazed.

Hal: Yeah, but I do remember that you saved us that day, my man.

San: We all helped each other that day!

Hal: Right! So what other books you working on?

San: Well, I have some other books that are centered around the Koga Warriors. You can see them on the front page of Onixan.com.

Hal: Awesome!! What’s the story behind the Koga Warriors?

    Bubs: They look bad-ass!

San: Hey thanks. I had created them in ‘98.

Hal: Wow! Since ‘98? What’s the scoop on them?

San: Well actually I'm still hammering out the story.

Hal: Its going to be a goooood story.

Bubs: Hey... Rome wasn't built in a day… or was it? I dunno...

San: I'm a Disney fan so I tend to take the Koga Warriors project seriously, so the folks out there can have a well told story.

Bubs: THANK YOU! Finally someone that I can respect!

    San: Ha-ha-ha, Thanks, Bubs.

Hal: That is great to hear! A lot of stories seem so rushed now-a-days.

Bubs: I can't tell you how many reviews I've done on the lack of story in today’s "art". Ask Hal, he puts up with my rants on the subject every time we write a review.

Hal: San is going to save the world!!

San: Yup. That's why I'm more of a starving artist. I stay outside of "work" to work on the real deal.

Bubs: Well San... you don’t hafta starve! You can share my plate of hot wings anytime.

    San: Sure thing Bubs.

Bubs: Thanks for keeping it real.

Hal: Yeah, thanks for the great interview!

    San: Guys, Thank you!

    Hal: For sure!

    Bubs: No prob!

    San: Oh… and guys…

    Bubs & Hal: Ya?

    San: I love Stupid Sci-Fi !!!

    Bubs: Nice.
