| Walt Disney home video is finally releasing on December 5th the mega swashbuckling hit that entertained millions worldwide, no I'm not talking about "the Wild",I am of course referring to "Pirates of the Caribbean;Dead Man's Chest" the sequel to director Gore Verbinski's 2004 hit "Curse of the Black Pearl".
Hard to believe but the sequel actually made more money than it's predecesor,a task rarely achieved but often dreamed in filmdom.
All the principals return for the new seafaring adventure in which Captain Jack Sparrow(Johnny Depp) embarks on a desperate, danger riddled search for the Dead Man's Chest which according to legend contains the still beating heart of the mythical Davey Jones himself , captain of the infamous Flying Dutchman and ferryman of lost souls of the sea.
Orlando Bloom (Troy) and Kiera Knightley(King Arthur) return as the unlucky lovers Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann who just can't seem to get married.
The film is chock full of stunning visual effects coutesy of the house that George built, ILM,and although the film is a little on the long side at 2hours,20 minutes the action filled segments and great effects make up for it.
Personally I found it to be a weak follow up on the original although it did have it's bright spots, the brightest being the performance of veteran actor Bill Nighy who plays Davey Jones in the film ,a villain for sure but one you can't help but sympathise with because of the cursed nature of his doomed character.
Davey Jones is by far the most interesting part of this film ,he commands every scene that he appears in and you can't take your eyes off him. The artists at Disney and ILM earned some overtime in the development of Jones and of the doomed crew of the Dutchman, an all around great job!
The film would make a great gift for the family but be warned that some scenes may be too intense for younger viewers. The DVD will feature among other things ,cast and crew interviews, film commentary on the making of the film ,plus behind the scenes material.
So if your looking for some funfilled cutting edge adventure, bring Captain Jack and the beleaguered crew of the Black Pearl home for the holidays. |
