To any sci-fi fan worth their salt these three alien words are well known and are featured prominently in one of the genres all time classic films.
I am talking of course about 20th Century Fox's 1951 classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still", directed by the great Robert Wise (Star Trek; The Motion Picture) and starring Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Billie Gray, and last but by no means least "GORT".
The classic film still holds up with it's anti-war, anti-nuclear message as delivered so effortlessly by the late Michael Rennie (Klatuu) who made his feature film debut with this picture. The film also stars academy award winner Patricia Neal (Hud) earlier in her career along with Billy Gray (Father Knows Best) and Sam Jaffe (Gunga-Din) who portrays an Einstein inspired scientist who befriends the alien visitor Klatuu.
The film was released in 1951 a mere four years after the Roswell incident and launched a wave of soon to be classic science fiction films, films like "Forbidden Planet", "This Island Earth", "Invaders from Mars"and "The Thing".
The film won a golden globe award the year of its release for best film promotion: international understanding. The true star of the film though, with apologies to the human cast is " GORT" the towering (8 ft) robot who serves as escort and protector to the alien emissary Klatuu and is capable of devastating power which, the local military forces find out, the hard way. The movie was mostly shot on location in Washington DC and is shot in black & white but don't be turned off with that fact, some of the greatest films of all time are in black & white and this one is no exception.
The DVD is pretty affordable at just under $10 and is full of extras, featuring a documentary on the making of the film, the original trailers, and audio commentary by director Robert Wise.
So pick up a copy and check out "The Day Earth Stood Still" and watch one of the all time classic sci-fi films.
