    Midnight Nation Print E-mail
    By Jason Rush
    J. Michael Straczynski is a name most recognized in the Science Fiction world for the creator of the TV show Babylon 5. Now he has made a transition into the world of comic books. JMS has given the comic genre something it's been craving for the last few years... a good script. His writing is intelligent and it flows very well and this can be seen in his maxi series Midnight Nation. What would you endure to retain your soul? That is the question and the journey throughout this comic is the answer for one LA PD Detective named David Grey. While investigating a homicide Grey is attacked by "The Walkers", a savage group of feral green men with odd tattoos, and has his soul taken from him by their leader. But death isn't the outcome of this, far from it. Instead Detective Grey has fallen "in between", this is where people go when they are discarded and no longer seen by society. It is a place of despair, fear, and b! elieve or not... hope. Now enter a beautiful woman, what comic would complete without one, and she is David's guide to find his soul. Laurel, the hot babe, is sent from the Creator to help the displaced cop. The goal is to get David's soul before he changes into a "Walker" and they must walk from L.A. all the way to New York City in order to do this. Since most machinery doesn't work "in between" they can't use a car, and other electronics such as telephones don't work exactly the way one would think. Laurel has done this kind of job before, but the problem is, no one like David Grey has ever accomplished the goal. But rules must be followed and that's what must be done. So, the journey begins and flows very nicely. Throughout this epic we see how the "in between" came to be, who was the first to go there, and who took David's soul, and why this continuous cycle perpetuates. One thing for certain, this is one trip yo! u wouldn't want to endure personally but JMS certainly makes you feel like you're right with these characters. The art of Gary Frank compliments this story like none other. The intensity of the words and pictures give this story a life all it's own. How badly would one fight for one's soul, even if you had to face the devil to do it? Take a look at Midnight Nation and see for yourself. I don't think I can give this series justice but I encourage anyone that enjoys an intelligent read with fantastic art to pick up the collection. Top Cow, Image, and Joe's Comics has put the whole series in one book that sells for about $30. And if you like Midnight Nation, check out Rising Stars from Image Comics and Amazing Spider-Man over at Marvel Comics.
