Man, you just don't get enough of good ole flesh eatin zombie horror flicks these days!
Hot off the heels of last year's British sleeper hit ,"28 Days" comes an American remake of an American horror classic, George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", and unlike last year's forgettable "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", this remake is, by far, a distinct improvement over the original film.
The story of a small group of people fending off an army of the "undead" while occupying a local shopping mall was writer/director George Romero's 1979 follow up to his classic "Night of the Living Dead", and although supplied with a good story, it suffered from a low budget and bad pacing. Flash forward 25 years later and lo and behold "the dead have risen again"! Director Zack Snyder has given us an updated and more horrifying rendition of Romero's vision.
The film consists of a talented band of actors including; Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, and Jake Weber. The film also contains some of the most effectively realistic makeup effects I've seen in quite sometime. Snyder has delivered a terryfying portrayal of the end of the world. The film starts off innocently enough with a hard working married couple retiring to bed for the evening after a long day,it"s the next morning when the couple's young daughter visits their bedroom when things start going horrifyingly bad...for everyone!
If you have seen the original 1979 version, keep your eyes open when you watch the new version, some of the original cast members make cameos, also horror effects master Tom Savini ("From Dusk till Dawn") makes a cameo appearance as a local sheriff with some good advice to the public. This new "Dawn of the Dead" has some notable differences from it's original predecessor, but the basic story, based on Romero's screenplay stays loyal with a "hell" of a delivery from director Zack Snyder and the talented cast and crew, in other words..."this is one Zombie movie worth dying for!" |
