Bubs & Hal's Return Of The King Review Print E-mail
    By Bubs

Bubs: Well... what can we say about The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King? Considering that this is the best series of films ever to be created.

Hal: No poop… it out did them all!!

Bubs: The whole trilogy is amazing... but most amazing was the 3 hours and 40 minutes of an ending saga.

Hal: Really 3 hours and 40 minutes? Zoomed right by, huh Bubs?

Bubs: Yeah, I didn't have to pee once.

Hal: Yep... it was that good.

Bubs: I did when we got out though... for 3 minutes and 40 seconds… weird, huh?

Hal: Very... anyhoo…what was your favorite part?

Bubs: Good question… I really liked Faramir's last battle. I thought that was a great scene with a lot of good music and slo-mo shots… I love that stuff… how about you?

Hal: I also liked the Spider… the dude that jumped of the castle on fire… the head orc guy… Gandalf's beard (nicely conditioned)… Gollum, of course… the dude on the winged creature with the metal helmet… when Frodo and Sam finally fell in love...

Bubs: You forgot the one scene that gave me chills...

    Hal: Which one?

Bubs: At the end when Aragorn and his people bowed to the Hobbits.

Hal: Oh yeah that was great!!! It really showed how well the characters were developed...you actually felt something. Lots of movies these days don’t have any feeling… or heart in the characters.

Bubs: Right... 4 films spring to my mind.

    Hal: Hmmm… Bond films?

Bubs: No... Episodes 1 & 2, and the Matrix sequels.

Hal: Ahhhh... There you go with the Matrix again. Bubs, Neo is my friend.

Bubs: It just goes to show that all the cool effects and stunts are not what make a movie good anymore. The Matrix was a great story... was being the operative word. The original Star Wars trilogy is still one of the best… but as anyone will tell you, the new films lack that special feeling that the others had.

Hal: Very true my friend. It’s great to see that Peter Jackson has now set a new standard for film-making… everyone will have to give it their best.

Bubs: He's raised the bar to a level that hopefully will get us out of this CGI filled slump.

Hal: I think it will. As we have said many times here at Stupid SciFi… use it as a tool, a way to help tell the story, not over-ride it.

Bubs: I would like to see us get back to movie tricks that require you to use ingenuity... forced perspective, actual movie sets, and extras!! What a novel concept!!

Hal: I love when they take the time to do it for real.

Bubs: Exactly. The fact that they built Rohan, instead of faking it, makes you believe that the characters are real, and in their element. I, for one, am impressed by it that much more.

Hal: I really felt like I know every single character.

Bubs: Yeah the development of each character was outstanding.

    Hal: Yep.

    Bubs: That's a credit to J.R.R. Tolkien.

Hal: I can’t get over all the freaking Orcs they had! WOW!! Real armor, swords, and sheilds…

Bubs: I know... it's more impressive to have hundreds of guys in suits than one CGI figure cloned over and over and over. Something Lucas should look into.

Hal: Well the great thing is, is that they did use CGI… but they used it on far away shots.

Bubs: …and for things that were absolutely necessary… like the eye of Sauron and Gollum.

Hal: The Return of the King was a great end to the journey. I feel very satisfied… like I had just finished off a big orange Shasta soda.

Bubs: Hey, I gotta a question. How many times did the movie fade to black? I counted 4 at the end.

Hal: Bubs, Peter Jackson did exactly what was in the book… I think the four endings were very important to the story.

Bubs: I know, I know. But by the third one my bladder was screaming.

Hal: Ahhhh… I told you to get the movie meal deal with the small soda.

Bubs: Yeah, I know... but I likes my sodas big.

Hal: But NOOO… You had to have the giant cup of soda with the Carbonation-ator on the side.

Bubs: I tell ya buddy... I'm so happy we landed on this planet together, if not for anything else, but for this movie series.

Hal: Me too my good pal! What a great thing to be a part of.

Bubs: It has been an awesome time... "All you have to do is to decide what to do with the time you are given." That sums up the message of the three movies in one sentence… and it's very inspiring.

Hal: Yep. I decide to watch a ten-hour movie trilogy.

    Bubs: Right...

    Hal: It’s well worth it.

Bubs: I'll decide to do that over and over again.

    Hal: Bubs?

    Bubs: Yeah?

Hal: Will you be my Sam?

Bubs: Sure... as long as you'll be my Frodo.

    Hal: No problem, buddy!!!

    Bubs: Sweet.

Hal: Wait… where's the ring? Bubs…? Bubs…? Where did he go?

    Bubs: Down here…

    Hal: What happened?

Bubs: I fell into the crack of my theater seat… but I found this on the floor.

    Hal: My ring!!!

Bubs: Yeah… I think it landed in some melted chocolate. Least I hope that was chocolate. On second thought you may want to wash it of before you put it back on.

Hal: Thanks, buddy. Ok… to sum it up we give it.....

Bubs: I give it a 10. For best movie series ever... and a 9.9 for a movie, only cuz I like The Fellowship of the Ring the best. What about you?

Hal: How bout an 11… and a hobbit.

    Bubs: That's about 11.6.

Hal: Yep, 11.6 and probably some ale. I’ve even heard that Jackson might take on the challenge again, this time for the Hobbit. It might not be over!! YIPPEEE!

Bubs: Yeah!! I can't wait for him to tackle another great title. He can do it right. Wait a second… did you say ale?

Hal: Yeah! Let’s go down to the Shire, Bubs, and get some.

Bubs: Sounds great!! First pint is on me.

Hal: Yeah and the second one too. I spent all my money on that Carbonation-ator.
