This is one of those movies where the trailer is the best of the movie. I am sure you’ve encountered this before. You got to the theater see a preview that looks mind-blowing and you say: “If this is just the preview, the movie has got to rock!” Well, this movie rocks as much as the trailer does, but no more. It is a beautiful movie, and Kate Beckinsale does a superb job as the vampire Selene. The guy who plays her beau looks like he acted in one too many soap operas but the bad guys are great. The story is okay, but they skirt the really cool issue in favor of a more PG-13 one.
Here is the low down: she is a vampire (and killer of werewolves), he has been bitten by a werewolf. The union is forbidden and you so want them to fall in love, try to have a kid, but sorry, no cigar, we can accomplish the union with a little blood here, a beaker there and boom we just ruined the ending of a good movie by making it prosaic. Sorry if this ruined the story for you, I hope I remained vague enough not to, but if I did, you so should not see the movie for the story. Kate Beckinsale, my friend. She is great.
The movie looks great. (She looks great.) And the movie is a good Halloween movie to see. Ahh, this is a hard one, I’d say see it in the theatre if you like Kate or vampire movies, or wait for the DVD. The best thing about the movie is how the cinematography, particularly the lighting creates an even mood throughout. Again like all my movie reviews this movie gets two thumbs up, five out of four stars and a barbaric yelp.
