Farscape: We're So Screwed, Part 3 Print E-mail
    By Captain SciFi

The end of the last episode left us wondering what Scorpius was up to after it was revealed he had been acting as a Scarran double agent. I felt certain that Scorpius, ever the intergalactic Machiavellian, had much more planned than simply assisting the Scarrans in their plans for territorial domination. Scorpius wasn’t out to screw Crichton at all; we’ve learned in fact that Scorpi will do absolutely anything to screw the Scarrans. In the end Scorpius was even willing to forgive Crichton of his promise to reveal the secrets of wormholes in order to set the Scarrans back.

"We're So Screwed, Part 3: La Bomba" was all about the Scarrans and finally a solid blow was thrown against these seemingly indomitable adversaries. Things were looking pretty dark before Crichton was able to pull out a last moment victory. How bad did things get? Crichton and the gang were all kept from escaping Katratzi, the Scarrans had finally figured out how to turn off Crichton’s a-bomb, and the Scarrans had disabled the weapons on D'Argo's ship, Lo'La. In short, the gang was left feeling quite screwed. Even Grayza couldn’t grant Crichton and Aeryn safe passage aboard her Peacekeeper Command Carrier, the Scarrans were threatening to blow it away if she even tried it.

Things were bad, but Scorpius was focused on the one thing he is even more obsessed with than wormholes, that’s doing whatever he can to mess with the Scarran’s plans. I don’t think Scorpius has ever quite come to terms with his Scarran side. It turns out the crystherium flowers the Scarrans love to munch on are essential to their mental development. Without the crystherium flowers, the Scarrans would be as dumb as doornails. This was the information that Scorpius was after in Stark’s head when we first met him back in the days when Stark was enjoying the comforts of the Aurora Chair. The Scarrans can only project their power out from centers where they are able to safely grow the flowers and Scorpius plans on burning their little garden to the ground.

Scorpius doesn’t have to give Crichton all of the details on this because Harvey is loose in Crichton’s head and filling him in on all the dirt about the Scarran’s weaknesses. D'Argo has his ship, Lo'La, set in a repair cycle and the gang sets off to once again wreak havoc. It turns out I was right my suspicions about the feasibility of Stark becoming a lackey in the service of the Scarran’s torture repertoire were correct; it wasn’t Stark torturing Scorpius at all, it was a bioloid copy of him set to fool Minister Akhna. Rygel and Noranti run off from the main action plot line to free the real Stark. Meanwhile, Crichton, Aeryn, Scorpius, D’Argo, and Sikozu set off in the Scarran version of The Great Glass Elevator to torch the Scarran flower farm.

Sikozu it turns out is quite a special member of the Kalish underground. We find out she has some special powers. She gets an override key for the elevator from one of her Kalish comrades, who then quickly gets shot and killed. The gang makes it down to the underground crystherium greenhouse, but Scorpius’ plan to destroy the mother crystherium plant is thwarted by a force shield. The elevator gets locked out of their control and gang of Scarran warriors is on their way down to kill them all, when Sikozu confesses that she was engineered to act as a weapon to kill Scarrans. All the gang agrees to keep her secret, Sikozu is finally starting to feel like one of the gang I think, and she preps to face the incoming Scarrans. Sikozu does her floating glowing gimmick and the Scarran warriors drop dead just as they enter the chamber.

Scorpius is none to eager too admit defeat, but without any known way to destroy the mother plant Moya’s crew manages to re-commandeer the elevator and head for the surface. They don’t really know how to steer this thing real well so they end up in the middle of the Scarran conference room being shot at by Charrids. Then Crichton, always the fearless leader, pulls another rabbit out of his hat. He gets Scorpius to agree to forgive his wormhole debt if he can destroy the Scarran flower farm. Crichton has managed to reactivate his A-bomb and drops it down the burrowed elevator shaft.

To sum up the ending, the bomb goes boom, Katratzi starts going up in flames, and all the gang including Stark, make their way back to Moya aboard D’Argo’s ship. We are left at the end with Stark saying hello to pilot and getting to know Noranti. D’Argo and Chiana, brought together as people are by life-threatening situations, end up back in the sack together. Yes, we are all happy to see it happen. Strangely, I was also happy to see Sikozu putting the moves on a reluctant Scorpius. She is one hot redhead and even though Scorpius likes to stay reserved and isn’t quite the emotionally loving type he ends up making out with Sikozu in the end.

Finally, the most moving scene of the whole episode is the last one between John and Aeryn. The emotional complexities the writers have incorporated into the Farscape plots are what have made us fall in love with this series. I can even understand why there are so many John and Aeryn love story fanatics out there, because in my heart I’m probably one of them (although I will be damned if I ever start writing fan fic). We are left with John and Aeryn lying together and John emotionally hemorrhaging with pain over what his struggles to keep his friends alive and protect the secrets of wormholes have brought him to. He spent a time with a nuclear bomb strapped to his waist and once again was responsible for the deaths of many. An anti-hero Crichton is not, for he does not enjoy the brutality of the fight he has had to face. John weeps and wonders who will have to die next. We all love Crichton all the more for his humanity, and thank goodness he has Aeryn around to love him too as Farscape comes to an end.
